About the Community
We are a community of individuals and organizations at the University of Pennsylvania that have come together in a common commitment to social and environmental justice.
We have joined with Earth Quaker Action Team and members of the University communities at Temple, Swathmore, Bryn Mawr, and Haverford to put an end to Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining (MTR).
We have a unique responsibility in this effort because PNC Bank, the number one financier of MTR, has a significant presence in Philadelphia and has financial ties with both Penn and Temple. While Penn has taken considerable strides towards sustainability through the Climate Action Plan of 2009, the University’s business relationships and investment decisions present a serious shortcoming to our environmental commitment.
We are working to address this shortcoming at Penn and to pressure PNC to cease its practice of financing MTR.
